Hulk Hogan, one of the most iconic figures in professional wrestling and a twotime WWE Hall of Famer, has died at the age of 71. The former world champion, whose real name was Terry Gene Bollea, passed away Thursday morning, according to officials in Clearwater, Florida, and World Wrestling Entertainment.
“WWE is saddened to learn WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan has passed away,” the company said in a statement. “One of pop culture’s most recognizable figures, Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan’s family, friends, and fans.”
Police and emergency responders were called just before 10 a.m. for a report of cardiac arrest. Hogan was rushed to Morton Plant Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Clearwater Police Maj. Nate Burnside confirmed during a press briefing that Hogan had been dealing with a serious medical issue. He added that there were no signs of foul play or suspicious activity, but said the cause of death is still under investigation.
