Morocco to Expand Airports Ahead of 2030 FIFA World Cup

As preparations ramp up for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Portugal and Spain, the North African nation has announced major plans to upgrade its airports.

Unveiled on Thursday, the project aims to boost airport capacity from the current 38 million to 80 million passengers annually by the end of the decade.

The expansion will target key airports in Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez. Special attention will be given to Morocco’s busiest hub, the Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca, where a new terminal and runway are planned. That upgrade alone could cost as much as $2.5 billion.

Beyond the World Cup, the initiative is expected to give a strong push to Morocco’s booming tourism industry. The country recorded a total number 17 million visitors in 2024 and hopes to increase that number to 26 million by 2030.

The 2030 tournament will also mark the 100th anniversary of the FIFA World Cup, with mind blowing matches planned across various host nations, making it a special event that must be well planned.
