Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda are set to mark a major milestone this Saturday as the Confederation of African Football’s African Nations Championship, known as CHAN, begins in Dar es Salaam.
This 19 team showdown is the first ever CHAN tournament to be co-hosted by three nations.
Group A is packed with talent, including two time winners Morocco, along with Kenya, Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Uganda, one of the hosts, lines up in Group C with Algeria, Guinea, Niger, and South Africa. Despite taking part in six of the last seven CHAN tournaments, Uganda has never made it past the group stage, a streak they are determined to end this year.
Reigning champions Senegal kick off their title defense against Nigeria in Zanzibar on August 5.
Unique to CHAN, only players from local clubs are eligible, no international based stars are allowed.
Running through August 30, this tournament serves as a warm up for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will also be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
