A female rugby star has made history by becoming the first Ugandan national to sign with a Women’s Super League club.
Peace Lekuru, 25, travelled from Uganda to North Yorkshire earlier this month to join York Valkyrie, a team with strong sporting ties to her homeland.
Lekuru, who plays either as a centre or backrower, said she has found “another family” since moving to the UK and called the opportunity a dream come true.
“I feel like I’m raising the Ugandan flag high, and I don’t take that lightly. I truly feel like I’ve accomplished my goals by being here in York,” she said.
York Valkyrie’s director of rugby, Lindsay Anfield, has played a key role in promoting rugby league in Africa since 2006, when she began working with the Tag Rugby Trust charity.
