Chelsea’s ‘World Champions’ Celebration Ends in Frustrating Draw with Palace

A giant banner proclaiming “Champions of the World” was raised high in The Shed End at Stamford Bridge before Chelsea’s return to league duty on Sunday, fresh from their Club World Cup triumph last month.

Yet by the close of a frustrating 0-0 draw at home to Crystal Palace, supporters were quickly reminded of the vast difference between a summer showcase tournament and the relentless demands of Premier League football, even after another round of star studded arrivals.

Chelsea were handed an early scare in the 13th minute when Palace’s Eberechi Eze rifled in a free kick, only for the goal to be chalked off because of a teammate’s positioning in the wall.

High profile newcomers Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens struggled to make a meaningful impact on their league debuts, leaving 19 year old stand in defender Josh Acheampong, trusted to anchor the back line, as the unexpected standout performer.
