In Sudan’s western Darfur region, aid workers riding donkeys have managed to deliver the first relief supplies to survivors of a deadly landslide that is believed to have claimed hundreds of lives in a remote mountain village.
The disaster struck Tarasin village on Sunday after heavy rains and flash floods triggered the landslide. Continued downpours have left the area cut off, making donkeys the only means of reaching families in need.
“Families in Tarsin have lost everything. It took our team more than a full day on a rocky, muddy, and hilly route to reach this devastated community,” said Francesco Lanino of Save the Children.
The true death toll remains uncertain. While the armed group controlling the area has put the number of victims at 1,000, Sudan’s health ministry has so far confirmed only two bodies recovered.
