The United States Mission in Nigeria has declared it will deny entry to government officials and other prominent individuals implicated in corruption.
In a message shared on X, the mission cautioned that such persons risk facing visa restrictions as part of Washington’s broader efforts to promote accountability and good governance.
The US has previously imposed travel bans on Nigerian politicians accused of compromising elections and democratic processes.
Just last month, Chatham House, a London based policy institute, highlighted that despite 25 years of reform efforts, corruption remains deeply rooted in Nigeria’s institutions.
It noted that the consequences for society are devastating and wide ranging, weakening democracy, stalling economic prosperity, and hindering growth.
This renewed US warning comes at a time when Nigerian transparency campaigners are voicing concerns about alleged misuse of public funds and abuse of power at all tiers of government.
