A naval frigate from Italy has been dispatched to track a convoy of more than 50 boats carrying aid to Gaza, following claims of drone assaults on the flotilla as it departed from Greece.
Passengers aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, including activists, lawmakers, and journalists, reported being targeted by as many as 16 drones, describing the use of flash bombs, flares, and possible chemical dispersals overhead.
Defense Minister Guido Crosetto strongly denounced the attack and confirmed that Italy’s vessel is on its way to provide potential rescue assistance. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also called on Israel to ensure the safety of Italian nationals on board.
Although Italy acknowledges Israel’s blockade as legitimate, Rome is urging restraint and full respect for international law.
Israel, meanwhile, has vowed to intercept the flotilla should it attempt to break the blockade, offering instead to channel aid through its own ports.
The flotilla’s mission is a direct challenge to Israel’s longstanding naval blockade, in place long before Hamas October 7 attacks. Israel’s ensuing military campaign has left tens of thousands dead in Gaza.
