Cameroon’s Presidential Race Heats Up as Campaign Season Begins

The presidential campaign in Cameroon officially began on Saturday, with 12 candidates initially vying for the top seat ahead of the October 12 election, a vote that could either prolong or end Paul Biya’s 43 year rule.

Among those challenging the long-serving leader is his former ally, Bello Bouba Maigari. The ex-tourism minister kicked off his campaign with a rally in Douala.

“Keep a close eye on the vote counting. Reject any form of fraud. Don’t let your victory be stolen. Real change must come from the people, and no one will be able to stop it if you guard it,” Maigari urged his supporters.

At the rally, Maigari introduced two former presidential hopefuls, Ateki Seta Carson and Akere Muna, who stepped down from the race to form a coalition with him.

Meanwhile, calls are growing for Maigari to join forces with another strong contender, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, whose team has announced that he will officially launch his campaign this week.
