UNICEF Raises Alarm as Millions of Sudanese Children Suffer Amid Ongoing War

A recent visit by senior UNICEF officials to Sudan has once again highlighted the worsening humanitarian crisis gripping the country as the brutal conflict continues to rage.

In footage shared by UNICEF, Deputy Executive Director Ted Chaiban was seen touring Khartoum and several other regions affected by the war.

During his trip, Chaiban interacted with children learning at a digital education center, where many were also seen playing, drawing, and building toys in a safe space created for them.

Sudan was plunged into chaos after growing tensions between the national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted into full-scale fighting in April 2023.

The ongoing conflict has led to one of the world’s most severe displacement and hunger crises, according to humanitarian agencies. Recent clashes have been concentrated mainly in the Darfur and Kordofan regions.

Chaiban expressed deep concern over the situation, stressing that urgent aid is needed, particularly in El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, where intensified fighting has tripled the number of displaced people this year alone.

“Every single Sudanese child has been touched by violence and is mentally scarred,” Chaiban said. UNICEF footage also showed aid workers screening children for malnutrition, as the World Food Programme reports that over 24 million people across Sudan are now suffering from acute food insecurity.
