Nigeria’s Super Falcons took a confident step toward qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after earning a 2-0 victory over Benin Republic in the first leg of their qualifier on Friday at the Stade de Kegue.
From the first whistle, the Super Falcons showed intent and control. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade came close to putting Nigeria ahead just seven minutes into the game when her powerful effort rattled the crossbar, leaving the Benin goalkeeper stranded.
Despite a few missed chances, the breakthrough finally came in the 24th minute when Chiwendu Ihezuo made no mistake after receiving a perfectly weighted through pass from Deborah Abiodun. The goal lifted Nigeria’s confidence as they continued to dominate both possession and chances.
Benin Republic’s defense tried to contain the Nigerian attack, but the Super Falcons’ pressure was relentless. Moments before halftime, Esther Okoronkwo doubled Nigeria’s lead, finishing neatly after another fine assist from Abiodun, who had an outstanding game in midfield.
In the second half, Nigeria controlled the tempo, moving the ball fluidly across the pitch. However, despite their dominance, they were unable to convert more of their chances, as Benin’s goalkeeper produced several key saves to keep the scoreline respectable.
With a two-goal advantage in hand, the Super Falcons are now in a comfortable position heading into the return leg scheduled for next Tuesday at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta. A positive result there would secure Nigeria’s place in the next stage of the WAFCON 2026 qualifiers
