Tension in Cameroon as Two Opposition Leaders Arrested After Contested Election

Two leading opposition figures in Cameroon have been detained, the Union for Change political platform announced in a statement on Friday, deepening post-election tensions in the country.

Anicet Ekane and Djeukam Tchameni, both supporters of Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who claims to have defeated President Paul Biya in the October 12 election, were reportedly arrested at their homes by armed security officers.

The African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (MANIDEM) also alleged that several of its members were abducted by security forces, accusing authorities of attempting to silence and intimidate opposition voices.

Tchiroma insists he won the election based on figures gathered by his party, while Biya’s ruling party accuses him of trying to destabilize the process.

Cameroon’s electoral commission is expected to announce the official results on Monday, but opposition supporters have already taken to the streets, warning against any attempt to manipulate the outcome.
