The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has voiced strong concern over the recent kidnapping of schoolchildren and teachers in Kebbi State in Nigeria’s North-West and Niger State in the North-Central region.
He firmly denounced the horrific act carried out against innocent students and educators, describing it as unacceptable. He also highlighted the continuing dangers posed by terrorism, violent extremism, and banditry across Nigeria.
The Chairperson urged that full accountability mechanisms be activated so that those behind these crimes are identified and quickly prosecuted under national, regional, and international laws.
Across the African continent, countless children remain vulnerable to the six grave violations of children’s rights, which include abduction, sexual violence, maiming, killing, and recruitment by armed groups.
The growing pattern of child kidnappings is particularly disturbing, and the AU Commission continues to work closely with Member States, regional bodies, partners, and civil society to strengthen protection for children.
The African Union also called for coordinated efforts to secure the immediate release of the abducted schoolchildren and others, ensuring their safety. It reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as they navigate this troubling period.
