US: Two Killed in University Shooting as Police Detain Suspect

Police have taken one person into custody in connection with the shooting at Brown University in the United States that left two people dead.

Nine other individuals were injured after a gunman opened fire at the university in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday.

Authorities confirmed on Sunday that a suspect has been detained. The lockdown imposed around the Brown University campus and surrounding areas has since been lifted.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said seven of the injured victims are in stable condition. One person who was previously listed as critical is now stable, while another has been discharged from hospital.

Reports indicate that police were alerted to the incident at about 4:05 p.m. local time after shots were fired inside the campus engineering building.

End-of-year examinations were underway when the shooting occurred.

Police have released limited details about the suspect, confirming only that the individual is male and was dressed in black at the time of the attack. Authorities also confirmed that a firearm was used but did not specify the type of weapon.

Earlier, Brown University said it was working to put support systems in place for affected students, staff, and families following the incident.

The university added that students were moved to a secure location where they were given access to counselling and other support services.

“Our top priority is the safety of our community,” the university said in a statement.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump also commented on the shooting. Speaking to reporters as he returned to the White House, he described the incident as “a terrible thing” and said prayers were with the victims and those seriously injured.

“We will provide updates later as more information becomes available,” he added.
