Africa’s Leaders Demand Global Power Shift at UN Assembly

In a bold and united mission, African leaders took the stage at the 80th United Nations General Assembly this week, delivering a serious call for a transformation in global power structures.

From pushing for UN Security Council reform to insisting on fair trade, their message was clear: Africa will no longer accept marginalization and seeks recognition as a true sovereign partner on the world stage.

A repeating theme in their addresses was the pressing need to restructure the United Nations, especially the Security Council.

Congo’s President Denis Sassou Nguesso described Africa as the “continent of the future” and emphasized that a UN prepared for today’s realities must be “more representative, more transparent, and aligned with the realities of our world.”

He stressed, “One can see clearly that the Security Council in its current composition no longer reflects the geopolitical balance of our world. Thus, the urgent need to reform it, not in theory, but in practice.”

This reflects a long-standing frustration that Africa, home to 54 nations, remains without a permanent seat on the world’s most powerful decision making body.
