A nephew of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea, previously embroiled in a sex tape controversy, has been handed an eight year prison sentence for embezzlement.
Baltasar Ebang Engonga, once the head of the National Financial Investigation Agency, was found guilty by a court of diverting public funds for personal gain.
Known by the nickname “Bello” due to his striking looks, the married Engonga became popular last year after leaked videos surfaced showing him with several women, many of them wives and relatives of influential figures close to the corridors of power.
The scandal broke while he was already in detention, accused of channeling a large sum of stolen money into secret Cayman Islands accounts.
He was convicted alongside five other officials accused of disguising the stolen money as travel allowances, with amounts ranging from $9,000 (£6,600) to $220,000.
