Benin Football Legend Razak Omotoyossi Passes Away at 39

Razak Omotoyossi, a Nigerian born striker who represented Benin internationally, has died.

His passing was confirmed on Tuesday, August 19, by his former Swedish club, Helsingborgs IF.

In a statement shared on X (formerly known as Twitter), the club wrote: “Helsingborgs IF is in mourning. “We have been informed that our former player Razak Omotoyossi has passed away at the age of 39. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

Omotoyossi, who began his football career in the Nigerian league before switching his allegiance to Benin, rose to become one of the most iconic figures in the nation’s football history.

Over the course of his international career, he scored 21 goals in 55 appearances, securing his place among Benin’s top goal scorers of all time.

He is especially remembered for his stunning performance during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where he scored all four goals in Benin’s 4-1 win over Togo, and emerged as the joint top scorer of the qualifying rounds alongside football legend Samuel Eto’o.
