Crystal Palace stunned Premier League title holders Liverpool 3-2 on penalties to lift the Community Shield after a gripping 2-2 draw at Wembley on Sunday, with goalkeeper Dean Henderson once again showcasing his penalty-saving brilliance from their FA Cup final victory earlier this year.
Substitute Justin Devenny sealed the win with the decisive spot kick, after Mohamed Salah fired Liverpool’s first penalty over the bar. Henderson, who famously denied Omar Marmoush in Palace’s FA Cup triumph over Manchester City in May – then thwarted efforts from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott.
“They were 2-1 up, you’d think we were done,” Henderson reflected. “The manager told us we would get chances in the second half, and we fully deserved that result in the end.”
Liverpool’s new signing Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring just four minutes in, combining superbly with record arrival Florian Wirtz before slotting home a classy finish. Palace hit back in the 17th minute when Jean-Philippe Mateta sent Alisson the wrong way from the spot after Virgil van Dijk brought down Ismaila Sarr.
