Ghana Sued by US Deportees Over Alleged Illegal Detention

A group of eleven Ghanaians deported from the United States have taken legal action against the government, their lawyer has revealed to the reporters.

According to lawyer Oliver Barker Vormawor, the deportees had not broken any Ghanaian laws, making their detention at a military facility unlawful. He argued that the government must present the individuals before a court and explain the basis for holding them against their will.

The government is yet to respond to the lawsuit, though it has earlier indicated plans to receive an additional 40 deportees. Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers are calling for the immediate suspension of the deportation arrangement until it is approved by parliament, insisting that Ghanaian law requires such ratification.
