Guinea Bissau’s Ex-Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Set to Return and Run for President Again

Former Guinea-Bissau prime minister Domingos Simoes Pereira has revealed plans to return home and contest for the presidency.

Pereira, who is the leader of the opposition African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), made the declaration in Lisbon. He relocated to the Portuguese capital after President Umaro Sissoco Embalo dissolved the National Assembly in 2023.

Addressing members of the Guinea-Bissau diaspora, Pereira admitted he feared for his safety if he returned, but insisted it was his responsibility to continue the struggle.

President Embalo, however, stated that the opposition leader was free to return without issues, but cautioned him against disputing the outcome of the November election.

If he enters the race, this will mark Simoes Pereira’s fourth bid for the nation’s highest office.
