In Rwanda, 150 teachers have been trained on the use of AI
The Minister of Education, Joseph Nsengimana, announced that more than 150 teachers have been trained on the use of artificial intelligence, AI, which is a step Rwanda has taken in the implementation of the ICT Policy that was approved two years ago.
He reiterated this at the Mobile World Congress 2025.
Minister Nsengimana indicated that AI technology will play a major role in reducing school overcrowding and improving the quality of education.
He said, “AI will be used to help students when we have a shortage of teachers, because it will allow more students to be monitored in a shorter time than one teacher could do.”
He said that Rwanda has made progress in training teachers in each district who are prepared to implement AI technology.
He said, “The first step is to start with teachers so that they understand what AI is and how it is used so that they can start using it. Once we have trained 150 teachers, that is, five in each district, they will train others.”
He continued by saying that AI-powered smart technology will begin to be used in schools next year.
To date, statistics in Rwanda show that there are 107,741 teachers in kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools in the country, including 50,468 men and 57,273 women.
In 2023, the Rwandan Government began using AI-powered smart technology in government sectors including health, education, which is used in research and teaching, and agriculture, which is used to control pests, spray pesticides, and irrigate.
