Mexican ship hits New York bridge, two dead
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at least two people were killed and 22 others were injured when a Mexican naval vessel crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge.

The ship, known as the Cuauhtemoc, crashed into the bridge on the night of May 17, 2025, while on a training and international tour.

The accident occurred when it attempted to pass under the bridge but hit it, sending parts of the ship into the East River.

New York City police said the ship was heading out to sea from Manhattan Harbor when it turned toward the bridge.

Initial reports suggested it may have suffered engine trouble.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said the two crew members of the ship were among the dead, and offered condolences to their families.

New York Mayor Eric Adams said this was very sad news, and that officials were helping the injured get to the hospital.

“We are saddened by the incident, we express our condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and we are doing everything we can to determine the cause,” he said.

The Mexican Navy said the ship was carrying 200 people and that an investigation was underway into the cause of the accident.
