Ecuadorian footballer Jonathan Gonzalez was killed on Friday, marking the third murder of an athlete in the country since the beginning of September, police confirmed.
The 31 year old, popularly known as “Speedy” Gonzalez, was shot in an attack inside a residence in Esmeraldas, a coastal province bordering Colombia that has been troubled by violent clashes between rival drug cartels.
According to authorities, Gonzalez sustained fatal “gunshot wounds.” Police have not revealed the motive behind the killing.
Another victim, whose identity was not disclosed, also lost his life while being rushed to the hospital.
