On Thursday, South Africans took to the streets urging the government to impose an embargo on all coal shipments to Israel. Protesters are calling for an immediate suspension of exports, accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
Demonstrators held placards reading, “Glencore is fueling genocide, No South African coal for Israel, Ban coal exports to genocidal Israel.” They argued that Glencore’s coal exports power Israel’s electricity grid, which in turn sustains its advanced military operations.
An executive from the Media Review Network think tank condemned the practice, calling it shameful that South African coal is linked to the killing of Palestinians. Marches were held in Pretoria, Durban, and Cape Town, where demonstrators delivered their demands directly to government offices.
