South Korea Secures Release of 300 Nationals Detained in US Immigration Raid

Three hundred South Korean nationals held during a large scale immigration raid in the United States will soon be freed and flown back home, South Korea’s government confirmed on Sunday.

“Through the swift and coordinated efforts of government ministries, business groups, and companies, negotiations for the release of the detained workers have been finalized,” Kang Hoon-sik, chief of staff for President Lee Jae Myung, announced. “Only administrative steps remain, and once they are completed, a chartered flight will depart to bring our citizens home. Our government will stay alert and act responsibly until every one of our citizens has returned safely.”

South Korean media also reported that Foreign Minister Cho Hyun is scheduled to travel to the United States for additional talks related to the workers release.

The detentions occurred last week when US immigration authorities arrested 475 people, most of them South Korean, at Hyundai’s massive manufacturing site in Georgia.

The raid concentrated on a facility still under construction, where Hyundai has teamed up with LG Energy Solution to build batteries for electric vehicles.
