Ticket sales for certain African Nations Championship (CHAN) games in Nairobi have been put on hold following chaotic scenes that overshadowed Kenya’s stunning win over Morocco on Sunday.
The Harambee Stars pulled off a surprise 1-0 victory against the pre tournament favourites at a jam-packed Kasarani Stadium, but the triumph was tainted by disorder both inside and outside the venue before and during the game.
Security lapses included a broken gate, fans getting in without tickets, overcrowding beyond the stadium’s 48,063 capacity, and the takeover of areas reserved for media.
Some supporters trying to enter through a lower gate claimed that police fired tear gas at them.
