Marguerite Gnakadè, former defence minister of Togo and sister in law to President Faure Gnassingbé, was arrested at her residence on Wednesday, according to local media and security sources.
Gnakadè, who led the Defence Ministry between 2020 and 2022, is also the widow of Ernest Gnassingbé, the president’s late brother.
In recent months, she has become an outspoken critic of the government, urging Faure Gnassingbé to resign and bring an end to the family’s decades-long rule.Faure Gnassingbé has held power since 2005, succeeding his father, who governed Togo for 38 years after first taking office in 1967.
