Tragic Death of Gambian Baby After Suspected FGM Sparks National Outrage

The heartbreaking death of a baby girl, believed to be a victim of female genital mutilation (FGM), has brought up widespread anger in the Gambia.

The one month old was rushed to a hospital in the capital, Banjul, on Sunday after suffering heavy bleeding.

According to police, she was declared dead upon arrival. While autopsy results are still pending, many in the country have linked her death to complications arising from FGM.

Prominent Gambian women’s rights advocate Fatou Baldeh condemned the practice, calling it “a brutal, senseless act” in a post on X.

“Shame on anyone pushing to decriminalise this violence. FGM is not culture, it’s cruelty,” she wrote, reacting to the devastating incident.
