US President Donald Trump is pressing all NATO countries to halt purchases of Russian oil and to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on China.
Writing on social media Saturday, Trump raised questions about NATO’s commitment to securing victory in the war in Ukraine. He argued that some member nations’ continued reliance on Russian oil weakens the alliance’s bargaining power with Moscow.
Since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2023, Turkey has become the third-largest buyer of Russian oil. Other NATO states still dependent on Moscow’s fuel supplies include Hungary and Slovakia.
Trump’s remarks follow an incident earlier this week in which Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace before being brought down by NATO fighter jets. The US president, however, downplayed the event, suggesting it “could have been a mistake.”
