Uganda has struck an agreement with the United States to accept deported migrants, provided they have no criminal history and are not unaccompanied minors, the country’s foreign ministry announced on Thursday.
In a statement, the ministry confirmed the deal had been finalized but noted that some details were still under discussion. It also emphasized that Uganda would prefer the migrants sent there to be of African origin, though it did not disclose what benefits the country might receive in exchange for taking in the deportees.
The US embassy in Uganda declined to share details, calling the matter part of “diplomatic negotiations,” but said the effort aligned with US President Donald Trump’s policy of “keeping Americans safe.”
Meanwhile, in Washington, the State Department revealed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had held a phone conversation with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to discuss migration alongside several other key issues.
