After years of conflict and decline, the Central African Republic is working to strengthen its national army, with Uganda stepping in to assist.
On Thursday, a group of fresh recruits flew out of Bangui’s Mpoko Airport to Kampala for training. The six month program will focus on intelligence gathering and tackling rebel groups.
The partnership is guided by a bilateral military pact signed between Uganda and the Central African Republic in October 2024.
“Training slots have been provided by this brotherly country to enable 1,800 young Central Africans to be trained as second-class soldiers,” explained Oscar Yannick Bada, head of the army’s training office.
Recruits were carefully selected from all seven regions of the nation, as authorities work to prevent the sectarian rifts and political weaknesses that undermined past armies.
