UN Assembly Turns Into a Cultural Runway as Delegates Showcase Heritage

At the United Nations General Assembly, delegates are not only delivering speeches but also making bold cultural statements through their dressing.

Beyond the debates and diplomacy, fashion has quietly stood out as a form of soft power and national pride.

The Associated Press spoke with several delegates about the outfits they chose and the meaning behind them.

This year, African representatives in particular drew attention with attire that proudly reflected their traditions.

From Nigeria, Maryam Bello emerged in her Hausa traditional dress, a vibrant outfit she described as “made to look beautiful to represent African culture.” Her attire showcased elegance with pride, symbolizing the rich diversity of Nigerian traditions.

Representing Lesotho, Sofonea Shale wore the country’s iconic traditional hat, named mokorotlo. “It symbolizes the mountain, actually a fortress where the founder of the nation was able to protect against attack,” Shale explained, linking his outfit to the history and resilience of his country.

In Madagascar, tradition and modern style emerged through the outfit of Aurelie Razafinjato, who emphasized the symbolism of flowers. “Modern and traditional because flowers are good for women, for resilience, for empowerment of the woman,” she said, showing how fashion can serve as both expression and statement.
