US Court Deals Blow to Trump as Tariffs Ruled Illegal but Left in Place

A US appeals court on Friday declared that several of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, which have shaken global trade, were unlawful, yet decided they would remain in effect for now, giving him room to appeal to the Supreme Court.

In a 7-4 decision, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld a lower court’s ruling that Trump had overstepped his authority by invoking emergency economic powers to enforce sweeping tariffs.

However, the judges permitted the duties to stay in force until mid October, a window Trump vowed to use strategically.

“The appeals court incorrectly said that our tariffs should be removed, but they know the United States of America will win in the end,” Trump wrote in a fiery post on his Truth Social account, slamming the ruling.

He further stated that he would challenge the decision “with the help of the United States Supreme Court.”

The ruling is seen as a significant setback for Trump, who has long leaned on tariffs as a key weapon in his economic policy.
