Within a day of regaining his freedom, Kilmar Ábrego García has been notified by US authorities that he could be deported to Uganda, according to his legal team.
Lawyers for Mr. Ábrego García revealed that he turned down a plea bargain that would have required him to admit guilt to human smuggling charges in return for deportation to Costa Rica , a proposal made once it became evident he would be released from custody.
His defense team now accuses the US government of attempting to “pressure” him into accepting the deal by threatening to send him “halfway across the world” to Uganda.
The Salvadoran national had earlier been wrongfully deported to El Salvador in March before being returned to the US to face the pending criminal case.
