The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revealed plans to introduce computer-based examinations, known as CB-WASSCE, starting next year. The move is part of the council’s broader effort to modernise its examination process and reduce cases of malpractice.
During a sensitisation rally held in Port Harcourt, the Zonal Coordinator of WAEC, Port Harcourt Office, Mr. Adeniran Amusan, explained that the new computer-based examination will feature a blend of manual and digital systems to ensure a smooth implementation.
He noted that the digital testing system will not only prevent examination leakages but also enhance fairness, transparency, and speed in grading. Amusan added that the initiative will eliminate issues such as the late arrival of papers and other logistical problems that have affected previous exams.
“The CB-WASSCE will solve the problem of logistics and delay in exam materials. Each student will be timed automatically, ensuring a fair and transparent process. It is faster, more efficient, and aligns with international standards,” Amusan said.
He further explained that the digital transition will help prepare Nigerian students for technology-driven evaluations, equipping them for global competitiveness.
Amusan urged teachers, schools, parents, and students to support the new system, describing it as an important step toward modernising education in Nigeria.
While many students have welcomed the innovation, seeing it as a leap toward digital literacy and education reform, others have voiced concern about limited computer access and poor exposure to digital learning tools.
Still, many education experts believe that the CB-WASSCE will usher in a new era of transparency, speed, and credibility in Nigeria’s examination process.
