Wissa Ruled Out of AFCON as DR Congo Announce Final Squad

Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa has been omitted from DR Congo’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, meaning he will miss the competition in Morocco.

Wissa, who signed for Newcastle for about £55 million on the final day of the summer transfer window, has not featured for the club since picking up an injury during a World Cup qualifier against Senegal on September 9. Although he has recently returned to training, DR Congo confirmed it was too late to include him in their AFCON list.

The 29-year-old has played only twice this season, both games coming for DR Congo in the September World Cup qualifiers. He hardly trained with Brentford during pre-season and missed all three Premier League matches while working on a transfer, before completing his move to Newcastle, who are currently in the Champions League.

DR Congo’s squad, revealed on Monday night, features several Premier League stars: Arthur Masuaku, Noah Sadiki (both at Sunderland), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (West Ham), and Axel Tuanzebe (Burnley).
