United States
President Donald Trump has defied a court order to allow the Associated Press
(AP) to cover the White House.
AP reporters were
once again barred from the White House when Trump hosted El Salvadoran
President Nayib Bukele on April 14, 2025.
In February 2025,
Trump barred AP from presidential events after the news outlet refused to refer
to the ‘Gulf of Mexico’ as the ‘Gulf of America’ in its stories.
Although the
gulf, which borders three countries including Mexico, the United States, and
Cuba, is usually called the Gulf of Mexico. However, in January 2025, Trump
said it should be called the Gulf of America.
AP has insisted
that as a global news organization, it should not mislead or confuse its
clients by simply changing the names of places.
On April 8, 2024,
a court in Washington, D.C. ruled that blocking AP was a violation of its
rights because no one is allowed to access information and ask someone else to
access it. It said it must be changed.
However, Trump
did not comply because he continued to block AP from his office, instead the
newspaper was granted access to interviews and press releases provided by the
Office of the Spokesperson for the President.
