A charity has initiated a £500,000 appeal to ensure that children in hospitals can engage in play activities seven days a week. Leeds Hospitals Charity aims to expand its service to support more seriously ill children at Leeds Children's Hospital, where 11,000 children were treated in 2023.

Play is recognized as an essential part of reducing stress and anxiety for young patients. A recent report indicated that a lack of play opportunities in hospitals can lead to trauma and mental health issues in children.

Currently, the hospital has a team of about 30 play specialists who organize activities such as crafts, video games, and baking. However, some patients have no access to play on weekends due to limited funding, which costs approximately £106 per day to support a play worker.

Lisa Beaumont, a manager at Leeds Children's Hospital, explained how overwhelming hospitals can be for children. She emphasized that the play team is vital in making the hospital experience less daunting and more enjoyable for young patients.

Ruby, a 16-year-old patient featured in the charity's campaign video, has been in the hospital since April due to a developmental disorder. She shared how much she values the companionship of the play leaders, expressing her desire for play support to be available throughout the week.

Play specialist Megan Harpham, who works closely with children like Ruby, highlighted the importance of making hospital stays a little brighter and helping children understand their medical conditions and procedures.
