The head of the Council of Higher Education and Universities announced that in the last seven years the number of higher education institutions has increased significantly because there are more than 20 applied to work in Rwanda and they met the requirements to start working.
In the discussions held by the Members of the Commission on Education, Technology, Culture, Sports and Youth with the HEC on October 31, 2024, Dr Mukankomeje Rose pointed out that higher education has increased in recent years and the number of students has also increased. .
He said, "From 2018 until now, there has been an analysis of the applications of private universities that want to work in Rwanda, many of these universities have met the requirements so they have started working."
For example, RICA (Rwanda Institute of Conservation Agriculture) has put agricultural experts on the market twice, there are African School of Medicine, African College of Theology, Keppler College, Mount Kigali University, African Health Science, University of Medical Science and Technology ( UMST) and others.
Dr Mukankomeje said that in colleges and universities the courses taught especially in the fourth stage of the university (PhD) have been reformed.
He said, "About 79 new PhD programs have been updated and launched in the University of Rwanda and one PhD in UGHE."
The number of students graduating from the university in the fourth stage of university (PhD) in 2018 was 19 but in 2024 they will reach 90, making the research done more and more. This year, the University of Rwanda has put on the market 53 graduates of the fourth cycle of the University in different programs.
The number of university professors in Rwanda increased to 4374, with more than 1100 postgraduates from 687 in 2018.
Dr Mukankomeje said that high level courses have been launched especially in medicine to train medical specialists in the treatment of various diseases.
There are also 23 new postgraduate programs at the Rwanda Polytechnic, Rwanda Polytechnic. The number of students entering colleges and universities also increased from more than 80 thousand in 2018 to more than 119 thousand, representing an increase of 48%.
"The fact that there is an increase of 48% is not enough but when you look at how Covid-19 has killed us, some things have stopped, for example in general education courses in 2017 we had 75700 students but now we are standing at more than 106 thousand."
The number of students entering Rwanda Polytechnic increased from 10,420 in 2017 to 13,000 in 2024.
