In the third episode of season three of the African Business podcast, we're joined by Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, the co-chair of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). She's also the United Nations Assistant Secretary General and the Executive Deputy Director of the United Nations Environment Programme. Mrema has been recognized as one of Time magazine's Most Influential People for 2024 for her work in leading the groundbreaking agreement on biodiversity protection at the Nature COP 15 in Montreal.
In this episode, Mrema discusses the TNFD's mission to develop a risk management and disclosure framework for organizations. She explains that the goal is to shift global financial flows towards nature-positive outcomes and promote transparency and accountability through corporate disclosures. The TNFD's work complements the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), and by integrating nature-related information into financial decision-making processes, businesses can mitigate risks, identify sustainable opportunities, and contribute to nature conservation.
The TNFD has aligned its recommendations with the TCFD to promote consistency and facilitate the adoption of an integrated climate-nature disclosure framework. The episode also looks ahead to the launch of the TNFD's final recommendations in September at New York Climate Week and discusses what to expect at Cop28 in December in the UAE.
