Brock University has renamed its math learning centre in recognition of a retired professor who spent his career making mathematics education more accessible and engaging. The newly named Eric Muller Math and Stats Learning Centre was unveiled during an on-campus ceremony on October 3rd.

Located in the Mackenzie Chown Complex, the centre provides support to students enrolled in first-year mathematics or statistics courses. It offers individualized assistance during drop-in hours and workshops for small groups, helping students understand lectures, complete assignments, or prepare for tests.

The centre was originally established two decades ago, inspired by Professor Emeritus Eric Muller’s dedication to improving math education. Throughout his 37-year career, Muller worked to make math education more widespread, introducing courses for non-math majors and pioneering the use of computer technology in teaching. His efforts led to the development of courses tailored to programs like Biology, Economics, and Psychology.

Muller’s influence extended beyond Brock University. He played a key role in the creation of concurrent teacher education programs and implemented community-based math initiatives in the Niagara region. His commitment to making math accessible to a broader audience has left a lasting impact on the university and the wider community.

Brock’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics continues to benefit from Muller’s work, with current faculty members carrying forward his vision of accessible and innovative mathematics education.
