Emily Lewis, a Purdue Global alumna and current graduate student, delivered an inspiring keynote address at Purdue Global's October 5, 2024, commencement ceremony. Reflecting on her own experiences, she emphasized the power of transformation and perseverance, encouraging graduates to be proud of their journey.
Lewis, who earned her Bachelor of Science in nutrition earlier this year and is now pursuing a Master of Public Health, shared her personal story of overcoming health challenges. After being diagnosed with the BRCA1+ mutation during the COVID-19 pandemic, she underwent multiple surgeries, including a double mastectomy. It was during her recovery that she made the decision to return to school, turning a difficult time in her life into a period of growth and self-improvement.
A passionate dancer, Lewis also teaches dance to adults with Parkinson’s disease and uses movement as a form of healing. Her dedication to understanding health and nutrition deepened after her cancer diagnosis, motivating her to study the links between nutrition and long-term health.
At Purdue Global, she found a program that supported her goals, offering flexibility and a comprehensive approach to nutrition and public health. She now aims to combine her degrees to focus on preventative medicine, driven by her personal experiences and desire to help others.
Despite ongoing health challenges, Lewis remains determined to continue her education and make a positive impact, using her journey as fuel to keep pushing forward.
