The High Court of
Kenya has temporarily suspended the immunity granted by the Kenyan government
to the non-governmental organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
It is after the
Government of Kenya issued a gazette containing the article that the
organization, due to its role in medicine, fighting inequality and fighting
poverty, will be given immunity both in law and in practice.
It has raised
controversy and some lawyers are going to court to request that this immunity
be removed because the State does not show why that family is the only one that
will be granted it.
On Monday, the
Court ordered that the newspaper granting immunity to the family ceases to take
effect, and on February 5, 2025, it will be considered when the trial can begin
so that all parties can be heard.
The court also
informed the employees of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that they do
not have any immunity for the time being
This organization
that fights against disease, poverty and inequality was given this immunity as
one of the articles of cooperation agreement between it and the Government of
Kenya.
