The Lagos State government has called on parents to prioritize the education, health, and overall care of children with special needs. The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Health District emphasized the state’s commitment to supporting these children through various policies and dedicated agencies.
This appeal was made during the first edition of a conference organized by Treasured Kids Foundation, aimed at raising awareness about the care and prevention of congenital and genetic disabilities in African children. The conference focused on addressing the challenges families face when caring for children born with congenital abnormalities, highlighting the lifelong emotional and financial burden these conditions can impose.
The speaker at the event stressed the importance of providing children with special needs access to proper healthcare, education, and social interaction. Parents were encouraged to be informed about the right nutrition and treatment for their children, as well as the appropriate educational resources. The government has established policies and programs, such as the Health Insurance scheme, to assist in providing comprehensive support to families.
A parent and founder of the Treasured Kids Foundation shared her personal experience raising a child with a rare neuromuscular condition, underscoring the foundation’s mission to foster a supportive community for families with special needs children. She emphasized the need for more awareness around congenital and genetic disorders to break down social stigmas and promote inclusivity.
The event also featured calls for greater community support and advocacy to help eradicate the neglect and stigma associated with special needs children, particularly in rural areas. Religious leaders, healthcare workers, and community representatives were in attendance to discuss ways to collaborate in supporting affected families.
