The National Institute for Basic Education (REB) has acquired two books that contain the values that characterize Rwandans, which will help students in their behavior, so that they will grow up to be Rwandans who are devoted to the country.

They are two books called 'Children's Values and Saints, a good example', by the author Kanakuze Jeanne d'Arc, published on Friday evening, October 11, 2024 in collaboration with REB, an event attended by various leaders with connections and education in their roles, writers, educators and others, all of whom have shown that they will add something to the education of children.

These books, which have been delivered to some schools, are not so thick as to make anyone angry, but balanced, containing stories from real life but containing useful teachings.

It also contains many pictures so that it helps the child to read it not to get bored, but to encourage the habit of reading. Author Kanakuze says that the reason why he wrote these books is that he saw a lack of values among the runners.

He says, “I looked at families, schools, workplaces and other places and saw that something was missing.

I started from the value of gratitude because I saw it happening, when someone does you a favor, don't thank him, pretending that it was your right or he was obliged to do it.

Others include training a young child to love the country, love work, respect, self-preservation, love peace, etc.

He said, “For example, the book Values for young children is not only intended for children but also for adults because it is the mother who must inculcate these values in children, so you would not give what you do not have.

So parents should read these books with their children, and watch them see how they change the behavior of the children. Brother Camile Rudasingwa Karemera, who has been a teacher for a long time, says that these books are important, because now the people are busy with technology.

He said, “In this day and age, people read the technology on the phones and computers, and find that it's just for fun, and they don't care about the quality of life or relationships.

So if a mother does not read the book, how will she train her child to conceive! It is good that people return to the culture of reading, so these published books will play a role in encouraging people to read again like in the past, when there were many written newspapers".

The CEO of REB, Dr Nelson Mbarushimana, says that it is a privilege to get a book that supports the manual, which is why they help the author to prepare it well.

He said, “So when we find an author who writes a book that supports our curriculum we still welcome both.

So these books help us, because in the curriculum we have in schools, we also teach the basic values of Rwandan culture, which are Love for Country, Unity, Politeness and Labor. In these two books, these values are included, and we invited people to come and listen to the content and to appreciate the author. Dr Mbarushimana continues to encourage other writers who have writings that support REB's curriculum to do so, and also told them that this institution supports them, especially that books are still needed in schools, because they help children grow up knowing how to read and count.
