The Government of Rwanda has announced that it is not having discussions with Donald Trump about accepting immigrants from the United States of America, only insisting that it is ready to work with any country that will show willingness to solve this migrant problem that threatens the world.
In November 2024, it was announced that the team of President Trump, who was recently re-elected to lead the United States, is studying how to send immigrants who are in this country illegally to countries including Rwanda.
"Trump campaigned on a promise to deport illegal immigrants and he's ready to keep his word," a Trump insider said. “His team is looking at the Rwanda program.
He is considering deporting illegal immigrants to Rwanda and other countries so that they don't stay on American soil."
In an interview, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Olivier Nduhungirehe spoke to The Telegraph, he said that Rwanda had no talks with Trump on this matter, he just emphasized that he is ready to work with anyone to solve this immigration problem.
He said, "We are ready to continue to contribute to finding a solution to the immigration problem, if in the coming days, months or years we enter into cooperation with another country [...] if there is another country's willingness to discuss this, we will be ready to discuss, to see that it can be implemented."
The information released says that this US plan is similar to the one that Britain had made with Rwanda, but it was blocked by the new Government led by the Prime Minister, Keir Starmer. Minister Nduhungirehe said that although this program was not popular, Rwanda had done what was required and was ready to continue to contribute to solving this problem.
He said, “We believe that every country should solve this problem of immigrants in a way that will prevent them but also treat them as human beings based on international law. We cannot tell other countries how to deal with the immigration problem."
He went on to say that "We did what we were asked to do on our side and we are ready to continue doing it, but other countries, especially European ones, should be consulted, looking for a suitable solution to the problem of immigrants in order to prevent them and welcome those who have arrived on their land and integrate them into society based on international law.”
Minister Nduhungirehe continued by saying that so far no decision has been made as to what the houses that were prepared for these immigrants in Rwanda will be used for, but he emphasized that they can also be used to receive immigrants who will be sent to the partnership that Rwanda can have with other countries.
He said, "If we enter into a partnership with another country, we will discuss the rules and regulations of that partnership and that can be reviewed at that time."
He said that Rwanda has never been angered by the return of Great Britain because it is based on the internal politics of this country and cannot interfere with it.
